Car audio, as a mobile music hall, has turned solitary travel into a form of enjoyment. Regardless of whether you are a car audio enthusiast or not, facing these metal filled equipment will be deeply attracted by their unique magnetism. But perhaps for most people, how to choose satisfactory audio equipment is a challenge.

Below, we will introduce some tips for selecting power amplifiers.

Determine the same benchmark to compare amplifier power

Power is the most important parameter in the audio system, indicating the ability of the audio system to carry loads. This is also the first thing we should pay attention to when purchasing. But if each manufacturer uses their own different measurement standards to identify product performance, it is often difficult to make objective comparisons without sufficient understanding. The same applies to power amplifiers. When checking the power identification of power amplifiers, the following three points should be noted:

One is the battery voltage.

The voltage of car batteries is constantly changing, and the two commonly used power amplifiers, 14.4V/100W and 12V/100W, are completely different power specifications. Due to the fact that the voltage of the car during driving is basically around 12V, the power value measured under the 12V voltage state is closer to the real situation. Moreover, power amplifiers with a continuous voltage of 12V as the reference for identifying power can achieve greater power when reaching 12V or above.

Secondly, the harmonic distortion rate THD.

When comparing the continuous output power of power amplifiers, it is necessary to perform at the same (or relatively close) THD value. The difference in sound quality tested under different THD values is very significant. Sometimes the maximum power indicated is high, but it is highly likely that its distortion and noise are also high. Therefore, while checking the maximum power, attention should also be paid to the THD value marked.

Thirdly, the frequency range.

The continuous power output of the power amplifier should be detected within its actual frequency range of use. For the power of the power amplifier, it should be required to identify the complete detection range, and only identifying the power value at a certain frequency is meaningless.

After determining the same benchmark, we can compare the power of the power amplifier. Usually, when purchasing a sound system, the principle of high-power output is generally followed. The higher the output power of power amplifiers, the stronger their ability to drive speakers. The power of the power amplifier should be greater than the indicated power of the horn. If the selected power is too small, it is easy to burn out when using high power output for a long time, and it can also cause problems such as poor sound quality and distortion.
